Travel Safe in Your Community
A Peer-Led Mini-Course for Youth and Families
Build confidence, independence, and practical travel skills — one step at a time.
Navigating your community isn’t always simple — or safe.
For many young people with disabilities, getting out and about can feel uncertain. Parents and caregivers often find themselves wondering how to support safe travel, without having clear or reliable information. The risks can feel real. And the weight of responsibility often rests heavily on families.
Travel Safe in Your Community was created in response to these realities.
It offers gentle, practical learning — co-designed with young people, families, and professionals — so that everyone involved can feel better prepared, more confident, and a little more at ease. Together, you’ll explore safety skills, practise real-life scenarios, and build strategies for moving through your world with more independence.

About the Mini-Course
Who is this for?
Many families and young people have told us the same thing:
"We want our children to travel safely — but we don’t know where to start."
This course was created by and for disabled youth, shaped by the insights of those who live these experiences every day. It’s designed for:
-
Young people aged 18+ learning to travel on their own
-
Youth under 18 working with support people or caregivers
-
Families wanting practical tools to guide and reassure their children
-
Teachers, therapists, and community workers involved in transition and inclusion
-
Organisations seeking ready-to-use resources for building safety and confidence
Travel Safe in Your Community is a place to slow down, learn together, and take steady steps toward safe independence — with warmth and support at every stage.
What’s Inside
The course includes six easy-to-follow modules. Each one offers:
-
A short peer-led video, acted by youth who co-created the stories
-
A matching section from the Travel Safe Workbook
-
Suggestions for practising together with a trusted person
-
A space to reflect, take notes, and build confidence over time
Topics include:
-
My Safety – Spotting safe and unsafe areas
-
Road Skills – Pedestrian awareness
-
Travelling by Bus – What to do and where to go
-
Travelling by Train – Stations and situations
-
Travelling by Taxi – Feeling secure and in control
-
Stranger Danger – Boundaries and speaking up
Each part is designed to be taken step by step, so there’s no pressure. Families and support people are encouraged to work through the content together.
How It Was Made
This isn’t a course made for youth — it was made with youth.
Through drama-based workshops, young people with intellectual disabilities shared real stories and created learning clips for their peers. Together with an advisory group and support professionals, they shaped the content to feel relevant, engaging, and supportive.
Their stories, voices, and experiences form the heart of this course.
Why This Matters
Research shows that many families never receive information about safe travel — and that young people often miss out on everyday activities because of it. Parents say they want trustworthy, evidence-based guidance they can use at the right time.
This course is one small but meaningful response to that need. It’s based on the Social Ecological Model, a framework also used in national road safety strategies. It invites us to see safety not just as an individual responsibility, but as something communities, services, and systems can shape together. By focusing on the most vulnerable, we make things better for everyone.
